5 Habits That Are Bad For Your Skin

1. Not washing your face before bed

We all have different routines in the evening, but if you’re living a generally hectic lifestyle then you may find it rather difficult to keep on top of your self-care (and skincare). However, our experts insist that no matter how busy or tired you feel, you must always cleanse your face first thing and before bed, every day! During the day your skin can trap various oils and dirt in its pores – so if you don’t cleanse it frequently you’ll be carrying day-old dirt on your face. Your skin will certainly thank you if you give it a daily scrub.

2. Not getting enough sleep

Sleep is extremely important when it comes to all aspects of looking after our bodies. It helps to revitalise our energy banks and allows our skin to regenerate, giving you a fresher and more youthful appearance. Make sure you’re getting between 6 and 8 hours each night! Bonus tip: try using a silk pillowcase – other materials take moisture from the skin, leaving it dry and flaky.

3. Smoking

When it comes to your skin, smoking causes ultimate damage. It results in dehydration and deprives the skin of the oxygen and vital vitamins it needs to recover and regenerate. Over time, this will leave you looking older, and your skin in need of repair. Start making the steps today to quit smoking if you haven’t already – your skin will certainly benefit from it .

4. A poor diet

While chocolate, sweets and wine are great as a mouthwatering occasional treat, consuming excessive amounts can do significant damage. Eating too much sugar and drinking too much alcohol are both particularly detrimental to both our skin and our bodies in general. These two vices can cause breakouts, aggravate hormonal acne and lead to red, inflamed skin.

5. Tanning

That tan you got in Cyprus may look radiant in your holiday photos, but it won’t be doing your skin any favours. Overexposure to sunlight can weaken the elasticity of the skin, leading to sags, bags and wrinkles – which, let’s face it, none of us want. Next time you’re on holiday, consider slapping on a bit of factor 50 for optimal protection. No tan is worth lifelong skin damage!
