What is Laser Hair Removal and How Does It Work?
Laser hair removal is a procedure we offer at all of our London clinics. It is a fast and effective hair removal treatment which involves a powerful Candela laser. The treatment affects hair in the active growth phase (also referred to as the anagen stage). The laser beam is made up of precisely controlled pulses of energy that are absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair and reaches into the active hair follicles that lie beneath the skin. The energy heats the hair, right down to the bottom of the root, safely destroying it without damaging surrounding tissue or skin.

At NYLC London, the laser hair removal process begins with a consultation to discuss the area of treatment and an initial assessment. During this consultation, we will also do a patch test on the area you have selected for treatment, in order to ensure we are using safe and effective settings tailored to you and your skin type.
On the day of your first treatment, we will cleanse & mark out the area of the body that needs to be treated with a soft pencil to ensure that nowhere is missed. Once the laser is ready, the handpiece will be applied to the skin. Some clients have reported a slight tingling sensation on the surface of the skin during treatment or very mild discomfort. The procedure usually lasts between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the size of the area you are having treated.

Laser Hair Removal London: The Process
Want to know more about what you can expect during the laser hair removal process at NYLC? Below we break down some of the key elements before, during and after the process – consistent across our London laser hair removal locations.

Before your laser hair removal treatment
You will always be invited for an initial consultation before we start the treatment process. This provides us with an opportunity to patch test your skin, and also allows you to ask our specialists any questions you have about the process and your expected results.
At NYLC, we will ask that you make some preparations before coming into the clinic for your first laser hair removal treatment. You will need to make sure you have not been tanning or using a self tanner, and it’s also important that you shave the area you wish to be treated before you attend your appointment. This will help to ensure the laser has maximum impact.
During your laser hair removal treatment
Each treatment will only last a matter of minutes, and there are only small precautions to take and things to note. Firstly, we will make sure your eyes are protected with safety goggles for the duration of the treatment. The laser is powerful and can damage your eyes if this safety measure is not taken – especially if you are having laser hair removal treatment on your face.
During your treatment you may be asked by the specialist to move into different positions so that they can accurately target the laser. Please be prepared to do this.
Note that you will be able to stop the treatment at any time if you are uncomfortable.

After your laser hair removal treatment
After each treatment, it is important to keep some safety measures in mind if you are to ensure best results. You must still avoid tan if possible, including self tanners. Our experts also recommend keeping out of extreme temperatures, such as hot showers, for at least a couple of days after your treatment. This helps to reduce any chance of redness or irritation around the treated area.
After a few treatments you may start to notice your hair ‘shedding’ or falling out. Try not to shave for a couple of weeks after your treatment – allow this to happen naturally. Eventually, your skin should show no signs of new hair growth and will be completely smooth!

Laser Hair Removal Clinic FAQs
What makes NYLC the best choice for laser hair removal in London?
New York Laser Clinic is home to London’s most experienced laser hair removal specialists. Here, we only use the most advanced gold standard medical-grade lasers, which means highly effective results. Our laser hair removal specialists have many years of experience, which for you, means successful hair reduction for any skin type. With minimal downtime and highly effective results, you could have long term hair reduction in just a few sessions.
Will I need more than one session of laser hair removal?
At any one time, only a small percentage of follicles will be in the anagen phase, so a course of treatment is needed to ensure that all follicles are affected and will not produce any more hair. Most people will need a course of between 6 and 8 treatments, after which time the hair will appear visibly reduced and skin will be smooth and even. For the best result, we recommend you wait 6 weeks between body treatments and 4 weeks between face treatments. We also suggest booking your laser hair treatment sessions in blocks of 6 or 8, so that you can benefit from the best discounts.
How long do laser hair removal treatment sessions last?
Session length is dependent on the chosen treatment, some treatments last as little as 15 minutes, but duration is very circumstantial. Don’t hesitate to contact us today for more information!
Does laser hair removal hurt?
We would not describe any of our treatments as ‘painful’, however this is dependent on the pain threshold of the individual and how comfortable they feel during the treatment. We make sure that we manage your comfort levels as effectively as possible.
Is laser hair removal suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, laser hair removal treatment is safe for sensitive skin in most cases. If you are unsure whether this treatment is safe for your skin type, get in touch for some free, friendly advice.
Which areas of the body can you get laser hair treatment on?
Laser hair treatment is safe for most areas of the body, including the face, head and neck, upper and lower body and bikini area. The only areas we have found unsuitable for laser hair removal treatment are around the eye and scalp area.
How quickly will I see results?
Hair reduction will begin after your first session! It may not become completely noticeable until you have had a few sessions, however. This is due to the hairs not all being in the growth cycle at once.
How long does laser hair removal last for? Will my hair grow back?
The results of laser vary from person to person as hormonal changes throughout a person’s life can affect dormant hair follicles becoming active. However, with our medical grade laser, we expect long-term results and can guide you in achieving these lasting results with a specialised treatment plan from one of our consultants.
How effective is laser hair removal?
The advanced, medical-grade Candela laser we use here at NYLC London is incredibly effective at long term hair reduction. The majority of our clients see results just after 1 session! We aim to target the active hair every treatment and estimate a reduction of up to 15% each treatment.
Who can get laser hair removal at NYLC?
Practically anyone over the age of 18, as laser hair removal is safe and suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. New York Laser Clinic’s staff are highly trained and specialise in treating men and women, both dark and Asian skin types, transgender clients both post and pre-op, and female clients suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). If you have specific concerns about whether laser hair removal is possible for you, please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
What are the side effects of laser hair removal?
During your initial consultation, we will patch test the laser on the area of skin you would like us to treat. This is to ensure you have no adverse reactions to the laser. Following the full treatment, you will only feel slight sensitivity on the area, and perhaps a little redness. We will provide aloe vera after your treatment which helps to soothe it instantly!
How much hair will I lose on my first laser hair removal session?
We always recommend booking a course of multiple sessions for optimum results. As each hair follicle will have a different growth cycle, it is impossible to remove all hairs after one laser treatment. Between 6 and 8 treatments, you will notice the best results.
How do I prepare my skin for a laser hair removal session?
We ask that you shave the area you are having treated. This is so that the laser can be administered directly to the hair follicle and provide better results. You should also not wear any product before your treatment, for example deodorant on your underarms. We will cleanse the area before starting the laser to ensure no product is leftover.
Is laser hair removal suitable for my face?
Yes, you can have laser hair removal on your face and we will patch test to ensure no adverse reactions.
How do I care for my skin after laser hair removal?
We recommend applying aloe vera gel to all areas that have been treated and avoiding hot showers for a couple of days after treatment. This can help to reduce any redness that may occur.
Is laser hair removal safe for the bikini area?
Yes, laser hair removal is safe for the bikini area and we will patch test to ensure no adverse reactions.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
Most of our clients report very little discomfort during laser hair removal sessions at our London clinics. We usually describe it as feeling like you are being flicked gently with an elastic band on each shot of the laser! The feeling will largely depend on your skin type, and the area you are having treated.
Is laser hair removal suitable for men?
Yes, we offer laser hair removal for men and transgender clients at all of our London clinics.
Can I sunbathe or use a sunbed after laser hair removal?
No, you should avoid any form of direct sun exposure during laser treatments as this can be harmful to your skin.
Does hair grow back thicker after laser hair removal?
No, your hair will not grow back thicker. After each treatment you will likely notice hair shedding and in some cases your hair will appear lighter when it grows back.
Can laser hair removal be dangerous?
We always patch test all of our clients to ensure no adverse reactions. If you take care of your skin and avoid sun exposure, there is no way for laser hair removal to damage your skin.
When can I start my laser hair removal?
You can start a treatment at any time providing you have not recently been sunbathing or on a sunbed. We always suggest leaving a minimum of 6 weeks between treatments for optimum results.
